2012 TOP CANADIAN BOXERS

THE HERE AND NOW IN CANADIAN BOXING

By Brian Zelley
*Trying to select the top ten
active Canadian professional boxers
is not an easy task as it requires some
effective and readily available
yardsticks.

The big issue is do we base it on their overall
record or their most recent performanc.

If we were trying to pick the best
Canadian boxers of all times with
names like Jimmy MCLarnin,
Art Hafey, George Chuvalo and
many others then the complete
record broken down into early
years before any world title
fights, the championship years
for National and/or world titles,
and then the post championship
years.

The Current active fighters do not have
a complete record to be able to put them
in any All Time Top Canadian Boxers list, as what happens in the
future bouts will have signigicant relevance as to their final
standing  until they are edged out by some new list to the top
fighters of Canada.

So in judging them today, then their position on the list of the
Top Ten Active Canadian boxers should be based on their most recent
bout.  And, how we analyze that bout is not only decided by the result
but the quality of the opponent in that fight.   If the potentiak rio rwb
candidate was facing  an ordinary fighter with a so-so record that
would not  likely be that significant in the rankings, but a recent victory
over a top ranked boxer at the top of his game would likely be very
important in the selection for a moment in time.  Then after each fight
by any active boxer, the selection committee or even an individual
would have to rethink the standings for another moment in time.

Recent Listings

*A recent listing based on BoxRec data and reported by
Canadian site: Boxing Canadiana has listed the
following male boxers from one to ten:
Now this list includes the ring
records of the boxers and 3 have
complete victories but it does not
show the quality of the opponents.

And that important consideration
is one is only good as their last
bout, but still quality of the
opponent should be taken into
considertion.

The other factor is which active Canadian professional boxers
that have won their  previous bout against a top quality boxer
or even done well in a world title fight has been left off of the
special list of the TOP BOXERS OF CANADA in 2012?

Pitfalls In Any Selection:
When it comes to picking the top ten boxers of all time
five of the ones that will appear in my list would
include:
SUGAR RAY ROBINSON - HENRY ARMSTRONG
WILLIE PEP - ROBERTO DURAN - EDER JOFRE
But, then it gets tricky with so many greats and legends
to sort out such as Barney Ross, Tony Canzoneri, Jimmy
Wilde, Joe Louis, Archie Moore and countless others
from heavyweight such as Muhammad Ali and Rocky Marciano
to the lighter fighters such as Carlos Ortiz, Emile Griffith,
Flash Elorde, Billy Conn, Marcel Cerdan, Mickey Walker,
Harry Greb and George Dixon, and many more.

canadian amateur boxing wall of fame

THE MANY THREADS ON THE TAPESTRY: by brian zelley

*A wall of fame for Canadian Amateur Boxing is made up of many names and events
and many boxing teams on a provincial and a national basis have added to the history,
the achievements and the pride that we have in the sport of boxing.  It includes the
many medal winners in the Olympic Games, Commonwealth/Empire Games adnd
the Pan American Games.

*It includes the effort of many builders in coaching and officiating and the start
and/or development  of boxing clubs from the Pacific to the Atlantic from
Vancouver Island to Prince Edward Island and the msny town and cities across
the land be it Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina or Edmonton.

1984 to 1996
*When visiting the status of our
involvement in the Olympic  Games
the years 1984 to 1996 proved to be
a time when Canada won several
medals in each tournament and the
first golden medal winner in this
time period was LENNOX LEWIS
in 1988 but we can't forget the medal winners  and the team of 1984 which also included
Lennox in the super heavyweight division.

THE NEW BEGINNING 1969
For the modern era of amateur boxing in Canada the new beginning began
in 1969 with the formation of the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association
aka BOXING CANADA and the first president was Montreal's own
Jerry Shears, but over the dccades there have many important
builders under Boxing Canada and the various Provincial Associations.

THE HALL OF FAME: CANADIAN BOXING

THE OLD CANADIAN BOXING HALL OF FAME
-by Brian Zelley
Introduction:
The original Canadian boxing hall of fame operated
for many years until 1998.  For the last 14 years,
the hall has remained dormant with no activity.
There is no one site or establishment where one
can go to view the names of the many inductees
that number close to 325.

There are now plans to revive the hall with a
fresh new look. Beyond the actual organization
and process there is a need to recognize the current
inductees from the beginning until 1998.
This blog will attempt to profile the 300 plus inductees and tell
their stories.  And, when the new revised hall of fame is ready
for the public, there will be a starting point and profiles of each
and every former inductee into the Hall of Fame

THE PAST:
The original hall of fame operated for years with the induction
of many, but after 1998, the symbolic walls came crashing down.
There are so many names of great boxers, coaches, trainers,
officials and other builders that have been recognized, but we
need to compile the names of all of the alumni of this
Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame and tell their story.

THE FUTURE:
It is the hope of many that the vision of a few will be turned into a
reality for the recognition of our greatest, and the enjoyment of many.

NEWS ON THE RUN:
*A fan page for former boxer  NICKY FURLANO has included
some good discussion about the potential revision of our
Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame.
